Bioplast 300® is the innovative new material our stock potato starch mailing bags are made from. As this compostable type of packaging is becoming increasingly more popular, we have put together some of the most frequently asked questions regarding the product.
What is the product and what's it made from?
Bioplast 300® is a plasticiser and GM free polymer which is derived from potato starch, it's a next generation polymer that can be used to make bags and films – alternatives to Polythene. it is suitable for composting in either a domestic or industrial compost system.
How should I dispose of it?
For films up to 58mu, you can put it in your home compost bin or in your food waste caddies or your garden waste bin for collection by your local authorities. If over 58mu then in your food waste caddies or your garden waste bin for collection by your local authorities.
How long does it take to compost?
For films up to 58mu, If you compost post it in a well-maintained domestic compost heap then typically 90% in 360 days, if it goes to industrial composting then typically 180 days.
How does the process start?
Biodegradation starts when film has been introduced to the micro-organisms, a constant temperature of 25OC and where humidity level is up to 80%, these three factors start the breaking down process.
What's left behind?
At least 90% of the material will convert into CO2, the remaining share is converted into water and biomass.
What happens if it's put into landfill?
Bioplast 300® is not intended for landfill, although it should degrade eventually, depending on the conditions.
Will it dissolve with contact with water?
No. whilst pure starch is soluble, Bioplast 300®is processed and the material is no longer soluble, it is grease/oil resistant, very robust and stable.
How should we store film or bags?
Store in normal dry warehousing conditions, away from direct sunlight and above freezing temperatures.
What is the minimum thickness we can buy?
25mu is the minimum we like to extrude at, the polymer is certified OK Home Compostable for films up to 58Mu, heavier films can be made but these would need to be industrial composted.
Can you print on Bioplast 300® films?
Yes the film can be printed. However, should you want the film to maintain its composability certification then there are limitations to coverage/colours etc within specified parameters.
